Bike Vancouver and the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition want you to become a confident city rider! This fun, practical and hands-on course is for anyone who’d like to be more comfortable on their bike, especially on the road and in traffic. Through classroom and on-road training you'll learn about the safest place on the road to ride, how to maneuver your bike effectively, communicate with other road users, handle riding at night and in the rain, and more. You’ll gain the skills and confidence you need to enjoy riding in the city!

The courses are offered at multiple skill and ability levels, see below for a more detailed description of the courses.

Family courses are designed for children aged 8-12 and their parents. Adult is considered 16 and up.

Upcoming Cycling in the City confidence courses (family and adult)

All Free Cycling in the City courses are now complete!

More courses are available at a cost through the VACC - check out our schedule here.

Family cycling course:

This fun, family orientated course is for parents who would like to be more comfortable riding on city streets and ensure that kids have the right skills from the beginning. Through classroom and on-road training you and your kids can learn about the basics of safe road riding, gain confidence with bike handling skills, and learn about the importance of respecting the rules of the road!  These courses are for parents with their children 8-12 (we will consider older or younger but please discuss with us about this first)

Level-2:
A level 2 course is for people who already have basic cycling
skills, but are not ready to ride on all types of roads. The course is offered on local street bikeways but with real traffic conditions. Those completing the course will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding
to be able to make the majority of their trips by bicycle in the city. These courses are for adults, aged 16 and up

Level-3:
A level-3 courses develops the basic skills and trains cyclists to make journeys in a variety of traffic conditions competently, confidently and consistently. Those completing level-3 will be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to be able to make their trip comfortably to school, work, or leisure on all types of streets found in Vancouver.  These courses are designed for adults, aged 16 and up

Interested in learning more about how your bike works? We also offer fun, interactive workshops that take the mystery out of the bicycle. Participants bring their bikes and we show them how to do a basic inspection to make sure it’s in good running order. They learn how to clean and oil their bike, check their brakes and gears, and a few other tricks to make their riding experience more enjoyable. We cover fixing the dreaded flat tire (not really such a big deal after all!), and help participants decide when it's a good idea to take their bike to the shop. Go here to sign up.
